Instruments are more than tools – they are long-term companions with their own character.
This is why, in my violin workshop Arbol in Cologne, I devote myself to their care and preservation with attention, respect and a careful eye for detail.
Whether a small adjustment or an extensive restoration is required, the aim is always to preserve the individual qualities of each instrument and allow them to develop their full presence again – through professionalism, reliability and skilled craftsmanship.
Workshop
At Arbol, traditional violin making is combined with modern analytical methods.
The workshop is run by Malte Stump, a violin maker specialising in restoration, repair and sound optimisation of string instruments.
Every instrument is an expression of its own individual history. My role is to preserve that history while strengthening sound, form and function. With meticulous care, clear consultation and craftsmanship grounded in integrity, I take the time required for both small adjustments and extensive restorations. Trust, quality and dedication are central to my work – so that each instrument can regain its full expressive potential.
Services
At the Arbol violin workshop in Cologne, a comprehensive range of services is offered for string instruments.
This includes expert restoration, where the form, sound and character of historical and modern instruments are carefully brought back into balance; precise violin repair addressing cracks, open seams or varnish damage; as well as sound adjustment and fine setup, with bridge, soundpost and string height individually adapted to the player.
The range of services is complemented by professional instrument photography, providing detailed and high-quality documentation suitable for insurance, sale or archival purposes. In addition, advanced analytical methods such as 3D scanning, optical analysis and dendrochronology are employed to enable well-founded assessment and precise documentation of an instrument’s condition.
